Our Approach

This film is the product of many of our favorite things as well as a marriage of the strengths of our respective backgrounds. Having shared a love and curiosity for many podcasts and backgrounds in visual storytelling - fine arts and filmmaking respectively - it seemed only natural to try to capture the affinity that we found in podcasts in a medium that was not strictly auditory.

As makers, we were interested in a medium that allowed for maximum control from a

narrative and aesthetic point of view. Stop motion gave us that control and chance to experiment in the auditory-visual relationship of the cinematic art.

Living in New York, a simple walk down the street can be accompanied by a musical staccato of moments and auditory glimpses into the lives of those immediately around you. We’ve mimicked this feeling and the romantic window into others lives that we feel we get from podcasts by incorporating documentary, field, found, and donated audio recordings into the piece and letting them shape the narrative of the film. By pairing handcrafted visuals with candid and personal recordings from the world around us we can tell not just Calvin’s story, but the stories of many others.

With an affectionate attention to detail we forged the minutia that makes this world cozy and authentic. We've embraced the intimate nature of candid audio and personal recordings in pursuit of the fleeting and profound feeling of connectedness. And so, we’ve created a sort of contradictory piece - one that mandated an extreme attention to detail, comprehensive planning, and even relied on our own ‘performance’ as Calvin to complete the it’s visual component with an auditory companionship born of chance.
